Two home affairs officials arrested in Gauteng and Makhado over the past week as part of an alleged syndicate that sold illegal passports to foreigners were granted bail in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
A department advocate Connie Moitse said Samson Mogashoa, 65, and Maria Moyo, 44, were granted bail of R2 000 each while the other alleged syndicate members - Hazel Shazaad, 34, and Rebecca Mnisi, 37, who are not officials - remained in custody.
Moitse, a director of investigations in the department's anti-corruption unit, said the four would return to court on January 17 to face charges of corruption, fraud and contravening the Immigration Act.
Mnisi's 25-year-old son, who was arrested for allegedly trying to destroy evidence against his mother, was also expected to appear in the Makhado Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
