A mugger who, with two accomplices, allegedly snatched woman's bag in Mobeni Heights in KwaZulu-Natal, is expected to appear in court once discharged from hospital after he was shot in leg by a police officer.
Daily Sun reported that it is alleged the woman, 36, was standing outside her home in Willow Grove yesterday when she was assaulted by three men who then ran off with her handbag and cell phone, Southlands Sun reported.
Hearing her cries for help, her neighbour, who is a police officer stationed at Presidential Protection Services, gave chase to the suspects.
During an altercation with the suspects, he shot one mugger in the leg while the other two escaped.
The woman's handbag was returned to her and the shot suspect was handed over to the Bayview Police Station. He was taken to hospital where he remains under police guard.
Once discharged, he will be charged with robbery with aggravating circumstances and will appear in the Chatsworth Magistrates` Court.
In a separate incident, an EMPD officer shot dead a robbery suspect on the N12 highway, near the Rondebult Bridge in Boksburg, Gauteng, in May.
Boksburg North police spokesperson Lieutenant Juanita Coetzer said the deceased and his accomplice had just robbed an Edgars store at the Mayfield Square, near Daveyton.
"They stole clothes and cellphones and drove away in a white Corsa bakkie," added Coetzer.
While on the highway, the two men were pulled over by the metro police officers. The officers who stopped them were not aware of the Mayfield Square robbery, said Coetzer.
The passenger in the suspect's vehicle got out to meet an EMPD officer, who was approaching their vehicle.
EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said the driver of the car tried to bribe the officer with R100, after claiming he did not have a license.
Mokheseng said the passenger of the Opel approached the passenger in the EMPD vehicle with a gun and tried to disarm him.
"The driver of the Metro police vehicle noticed this and shot at him, fatally wounding the man. The suspect died on the scene after he succumbed to his wounds," added Mokheseng.
