Zimbabwe's Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development has lauded the media for transforming various communities through sharing informative and educative texts which were used as referral templates by farmers countrywide towards food security.

Speaking in Harare this Friday during a media engagement, interaction and networking event; the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Professor Obert Jiri has announced that the country has recorded an improvement in yields, food security, storage and management systems.

"Our media partners play a pivotal role in informing, educating and sharing early warning systems during information dissemination countrywide. These have therefore been used as referral platforms where farmers would use as sources of necessary and precautionary information guiding them on the best practices to ensure the country will be food secure," Jiri said.

"Statistics have shown that  the bulk of our farmers relied much on media messaging and several reported stories assisted our farmers to make informed decisions thereof. It has been noted that sharing of accurate information relayed through the media has provided the best content which were indirectly and directly prescriptive towards food security mechanisms," Jiri added.

Meanwhile, Jiri has announced that despite projecting the loss of 2.7 million cattle this year, the actual loss was less than 15000 which he attributed to accurate information provided by the media amongst livestock farmers countrywide.

"Imagine that countrywide, we recorded less than fifteen thousand cattle lost in 2023/24 drought season, which shows a significant decrease considering that from the previous droughts we lost over a million cattle. This recovery impact was made through accurate and timeous reportage or information shared by the media with our livestock farmers," Jiri added.
