To promote effective teaching in Vocational and Technical colleges Botswana has signed a memorandum of understanding with Zimbabwe.

The pact according to the Botswana minister of education and skills development Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi became imperative in the view of the mismatch in the type of graduates the country is producing to what is needed in the market.

"We have a number of graduates who are not employed at the same time we have a lot of jobs simply because the skills we are producing are not what is needed in the industry," she said.

The MOU is meant to facilitate Zimbabwean TVET personnel to be seconded for a fixed term to Botswana in specific TVET fields. In addition the agreement will allow Botswana personnel to be trained at recognized TVET training institutions in Zimbabwe.

The two countries will share information and best practices in the training of TVET personnel as well as promotion on research and development on TVET between two countries

"Botswana is asking Zimbabwe to identify a group of lectures that could come into the country on a fixed contract to train Batswana in Technical colleges and vocational centers," said Venson-Moitoi. The lectures are expected to start work on the 1st August 2013.

She added that the country has limited a number of local lectures to lecture at the Technical Colleges and Vocational centers.

Venson-Moitoi admitted the excellent job that has been done by Zimbabwean nationals in Botswana especially in vocational work and technical work.

"As we sign this MOU we are fully aware of our duty and moral obligation to assist each other," said Ignatius Chombo the acting minister of higher and tertiary education.

Chombo said the speedy and full implementation of the MOU will go a long way in deepening and strengthening relations.

The MOU which was supposed to come into effect in December 2011 was delayed due to unknown reasons.
