GOKOMERE High School came out tops in last year's Advanced Level examinations in Masvingo Province with 16 pupils getting 15 or more points.
The Chronicle reports that the Roman Catholic Church school had one of its candidates scoring 24 points while four scored 14 and 13 points respectively with seven getting 12 points each.
Pamushana High came second with nine 15 pointers, four with 14 points, seven with 13 points and six with 12 points.
Serima High was dislodged from last year's second position to third position with seven pupils managing 15 points and above while 25 scored between 12 and 14 points.
In Zaka District, St Anthony produced six pupils with 15 points and above to clinch the fourth position while Lundi High from Mwenezi District came out fifth with three pupils scoring 15 points and above.
Ndarama High in Masvingo urban became the only day school with three pupils scoring 15 points and above while 20 got between 12 and 14 points.
Zion Christian Church-run Mutendi High and Silveira High came out seventh and eighth respectively with three candidates scoring 15 points and above each.
Mashoko High made the top 10 with one pupil scoring 15 points while six others scored between 12 and 14 points.
Two Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (RCZ)-run schools; Chivi and Zimuto High schools made it into the province's top 12 best schools.
Church of Christ schools that include Mashoko High and Dewure High School settled for position eight and nine in the province after producing more than 10 students with 12 points each.
Masvingo deputy provincial education director Andrew Chikwange said the provincial pass rate slightly improved from last year but the quality of passes remained low.
"Overally, pupils who have passed with quality results are fewer than those who completed in 2012. The number of pupils with 15 points and above is fewer than last year," he said.
"We are still analysing the causes of such a decrease but generally the province has done well from last year. We are working on a detailed provincial analysis but what we have gathered so far is that Gokomere is leading according to the quality of results analysis."
Chikwange said his ministry would soon conduct a rigorous exercise to verify if schools are using material from valid curriculum.
