TEHRAN - The Western sanctions against Iran serve psychological purposes rather than being a measure of effective use, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Sunday.
"Enemies of Iran try to block the nation's progress and they have waged a massive psychological war (on the country)," Ahmadinejad was quoted by Fars news agency as saying.
When addressing people in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahwaz in Khuzestan province, Ahmadinejad said as the enemies could not impede progress in the country's nuclear program, they will not succeed in countering the Iranian nation in the economic arena either.
Also on Sunday, Iranian Deputy Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Kioumars Fathollah Kermanshahi played down the effects of the West's sanctions against the Islamic republic, saying that the Iranian nation has managed to turn the embargo into opportunities for further progress, according to Fars.
Iran is under substantive sanction pressures, especially on its oil industry, oil exports and financial system, by the West over the country's controversial nuclear program.
In January 2012, the European Union decided to impose additional sanctions on Iran, targeting its central bank and oil exports.
Since 2012, Iran's currency value has significantly slumped against foreign currencies due to heavy pressure brought by the Western sanctions on Iran's central bank.
Iranian officials have repeatedly rejected the impacts of sanction pressures on the country's oil industry and economy.
