A Zimbabwean woman has been detained in the UK and is now set to be forcibly sent back to Harare.
Evenia Mawongera (55) has been living in Leicester with her daughters and grandchildren, all of whom are British citizens, for close to 10 years.
Mawongera's asylum applications have been rejected. She was an asylum seeker for the past five years. As part of asylum conditions, she regularly reported to the UK Border Agency reporting station in Loughborough.
However, on Friday 5 July 2013 she was detained and held at Loughborough Police Station. From there, she was transferred to Yarl's Wood Immigration Detention Centre in Bedford pending removal to Zimbabwe.
Mawongera is a member of the Zimbabwe Association Choir and is one of the people who performed for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II when Her Majesty The Queen visited Leicester to mark the start of her Diamond Jubilee.
She fears persecution if she is deported. Campaigners are now working hard to get her to stay in the UK.
