Police in the Hlalani Kuhle section of Bulawayo's Cowdray Park suburb are investigating a suspected case of backyard abortion after a foetus, suspected to be seven or eight months old, was found near a communal tap.

A resident said he was sleeping in his house when his niece woke him up, saying she had seen a strange object in the yard.

"I am sure the girl who did it, whoever it is, dug a shallow grave here and dumped the foetus in a plastic bag," he said.

"Dogs should have smelt the blood and dragged the foetus out of the shallow grave and left it here."

Councillor Collet Ndlovu said three suspects had been picked up and were helping the police with investigations.

"Police collected the foetus which was in a plastic bag and rounded up three girls, one of whom is suspected to have dumped the child."

But Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo said they were yet to get a report about the incident.
