Veteran diplomat Stuart Comberbach has been named as Zimbabwe's new permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

Comberbach, 68, got his marching orders from President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday.

Mnangagwa also met with Zimbabwe's ambassador to the European Union Amon Mutembwa and the ambassador to the United States Tedeous Chifamba, urging the trio to double their efforts to normalise relations with western countries.

Comberbach has worked in the foreign affairs ministry since 1974. He previously served as Zimbabwe's ambassador to Italy (1994 - 1999) and ambassador to Japan and South Korea (2003 - 2014).

Before his latest assignment, Comberbach was working as a special adviser to the foreign minister Sibusiso Moyo, who died from Covid-19 in January.

Frederick Shava, Zimbabwe's former ambassador to the United Nations in New York, was sworn-in this week as the new foreign minister.
