The newly-appointed interim coach of the Warriors, Baltemar Brito, had not yet met with and signed a contract with the Zifa Normalisation Committee as of late yesterday, despite his appointment to lead the senior men's national team a week ago.
Brito traveled to Harare using public transportation to meet with the Zifa Normalisation Committee and finalize their contractual matters.
The Warriors are scheduled to depart for Botswana today, where they will face The Zebras on Saturday as part of Botswana's Independence celebrations.
Last week, Zifa announced Brito's appointment as the national team's interim coach until June 2024. He will be assisted by Bongani Mafu and Genius Mangombe, with Mafu currently on suspension at his club, Hwange.
Brito, accompanied by Mafu and the Bulawayo-based Warriors players, made the bus trip to Harare. His interpreter and assistant at Highlanders, Antonio Torres, also traveled with them.
In a brief interview before the trip, Brito, a Portuguese national, mentioned that he was en route to meet with the Zifa Normalisation Committee, led by Lincoln Mutasa. He stated that he had not yet met with them or signed any agreements, but someone had called him to arrange a discussion.
Mutasa confirmed their planned meeting with Brito in the capital but clarified that the coach's contract was ready for signing. He also mentioned that the Warriors would begin their training in Botswana soon, and they would address other important matters when Brito arrived in Harare.
Brito's primary responsibility will be preparing the Warriors for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers scheduled to commence in November.
