Marvelous Nakamba, the England-based midfielder, is expected to be announced as the captain of the Zimbabwe senior men's football team in preparation for the team's upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Nigeria later this month. Nakamba, who currently plays for English Premier League side Luton Town, is set to take over the Warriors' captaincy from Knowledge Musona, who retired from international football last year.
Although many had anticipated that Marshall Munetsi, who plays in France, would be named the captain, it has been revealed that the new Warriors coach, Baltemar Brito, has chosen Nakamba for the leadership role. While Brito has not officially confirmed this, a source has informed NewsDay Sport that the 29-year-old Hwange-born star will be appointed as the captain.
A notable indicator that Nakamba will be the new captain came when Brito selected him as the Zimbabwean captain's representative for voting in the FIFA Ballon d'Or two months ago. The FIFA Ballon d'Or award is determined by votes from national team coaches, their captains, and a selected group of journalists.
Nakamba is among the senior players retained in the Warriors squad for the upcoming matches against Rwanda and Nigeria. Other key players include Marshall Munetsi, goalkeeper Washington Arubi, Tendayi Darikwa, Teenage Hadebe, Jordan Zemura, and Tino Kadewere.
