POLICE have arrested a Hwange man on suspicion of malicious damage to property after he went on a spree of removing front badges of Mercedes Benz cars.
Peter Ndlovu, 38, from Empumalanga suburb in Hwange, was not charged when he appeared before Hwange magistrate, Portia Mhlanga recently. He faces five counts.
Mhlanga had ordered that Ndlovu be mentally examined by two doctors due to the nature of the offence and circumstances surrounding the crimes.
However, the initial reports from two doctors presented in court yesterday gave conflicting reports about Ndlovu's state of mind. Magistrate Mhlanga ordered that he be examined by a third psychiatrist. Ndlovu, a brick moulder in the coal mining town, was remanded in custody and will next appear in court on October 10.
Prosecuting, Fadzai Mharadze said on five different occasions this year between July 30 and August 31, Ndlovu went on a crime spree where he targeted Mercedes Benz cars parked in the Central Business District and plucked out their iconic front badges and stole them.
"Police received reports that there was a series of malicious damage to property where a suspect was removing front badges of Mercedes Benz in the CBD. He was seen by Simon Zikhali who reported the matter thereby leading to investigations and subsequent arrest of Ndlovu," said the prosecutor.
On the first count, Ndlovu allegedly went to a Mercedes Benz belonging to Monica Mukondo of Chibondo suburb. Mukundo had parked her vehicle near TM supermarket on July 30.
The court heard that Ndlovu allegedly removed the front badge and went away.
Mharadze said Mukondo noticed that the badge had been removed when she came out of the supermarket and reported the matter to the police.
The badge is worth $300.
On the second count, the court heard that Ndlovu removed the badge from Sharpless Mandebvu's Benz which he had parked outside Agribank as he went to Deka service station. "When Mandebvu came back to his car he found the front badge worth $400 missing," said Mharadze.
On August 4, Ndlovu allegedly removed a badge from John Chikondo's Mercedes Benz which he had parked near TM supermarket and quickly disappeared from the scene.
The value of the badge was $250.
The two other crimes were committed on August 8 and 31.
At Julius Peter's house Ndlovu removed the badge, four jacking point covers and right side hooter screen with a combined value of $466.
It is alleged that on August 31 Ndlovu used a stone to smash window panes and other equipment worth a combined $1,000 at Hwange Dental Surgery.
A report was made to the police resulting in Ndlovu's arrest.
