ZIMBABWEANS must buy Zimbabwean products as that will, enhance economic growth and create employment, a businessman has said
Addressing stakeholders at the launch of the Buy Zimbabwe campaign on Friday last week, the general manager of Buy Zimbabwe, Mr Munyaradzi Hwengwerere said the country has vast potential to improve its economy and create employment.
This he said was easy to do if Zimbabweans gave first preference to their products at the expense of foreign goods.
He singled out Mazoe Orange as one locally produced drink that has managed to stand the test of time.
"We must buy our own products. There is no reason as to we prefer some foreign goods at the expense of what we have here.
"Look for example, we have our own Mazoe Orange which is internationally known and loved," he said.
Mr Hwengwerere added that Zimbabweans should also join the Buy Zimbabwe campaign.
"I urge you all to be part of this campaign and it will go a long way in improving our situation," he said.
Buy Zimbabwe is a competitiveness driver that works closely government and other stakeholders to promote the production and consumption of local goods and services on the local and international market.
The Buy Zimbabwe Campaign is designed to unlock the country full potential and inspire economic growth and competitiveness of local brands.
"Poor performance is influenced by influx of foreign alternatives, counterfeit products, low capacity, utilization, policy inconsistency and several other factors," said Mr Hwengwerere.
During the first quarter of this year, Zimbabwe recorded a trade deficit of US$557, 6 million representing a lower export value compared to imports.
The shopping baskets of a majority of Zimbabwean consumers contain 80-90% foreign goods.
This outflow s of dollars and lack of liquidity has further worsened the country's productive sector resulting in more job cuts.
Creativity in terms of marketing and communicating with the consumer has also been cited as a major contributor to the failure of some of the country's leading businesses, "said a participant during the plenary.
Buy Zimbabwe has borrowed examples from other "Buy Local" campaigns as Proudly South African and Australian Made.
