A Chitungwiza man (28) died on Christmas Day after being struck with an empty beer bottle following an argument over a cigarette.
Prougn Maonedzo died on arrival at Chitungwiza General Hospital after sustaining head and neck injuries.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau said Maonedzo asked for a cigarette from Tatenda Hwenerai (26), who turned down the request.
It is alleged that Maonedzo went on to grab the cigarette, resulting in an altercation.
"An argument started between the two who were believed to be drunk. They started fighting at around 11pm on Christmas Day," said Insp Sabau.
"Hwenerai struck Maonedzo with a bottle on the head and neck and he suffered severe injuries."
Insp Sabau said Maonedzo was rushed to Chitungwiza Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He said Hwenerai was arrested and appeared in court last Friday facing a murder charge.
He was remanded in custody to later this month for continuation of the trial.
Insp Sabau urged members of the public to desist from public drinking as a lot of deaths reported last year emanated from drinking spots.
