The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) will soon dispatch 107 point-of-sale (POS) machines on selected roadblocks across the country in a move that is aimed at eliminating the need for cash at roadblocks which had propagated corruption.
In a live interview on Ruvheneko on the Deep Dive slot last night, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the development of acquiring POS machines for the traffic sections, will see an improvement in the operational procedures of the police force at road blocks.
"In a recent development, a consignment of 107 point-of-sale machines was received through a local bank on 9 June, which is very recent. These devices will be distributed to traffic sections and other operational stations. For now, we do not have them on all roadblocks, but we are also trying our best to ensure availability.
"A further 500 POS machines have already been acquired under a public-private partnership with a local company, and they are working on installation of the software right now.
"Someone was actually complaining this morning that he was rushing to work and wanted to pay for his fine using plastic money and wanted to swipe there and then, but was asked to go to Harare Central because he did not have cash. Please do bear with us, resources are not on our side but we are working flat out to eliminate the need of cash on our roadblocks. This is a development that will wield great potential to address a lot of challenges," she said.
Snr Ass Comm Charamba also pointed out challenges associated with using POS machines saying they will need to be charged frequently and require handling with care.
She further noted that this bulk consignment was not the first one for ZRP as they already have 40 POS machines, already in use at their various police headquarters.
