A Bulawayo man allegedly sold a car and reported it stolen in a bid to get it back.

Tarisai Shava is said to have sold a ramshackle that couldn't even escape the eye of the most relaxed traffic police officer for $600 to Nqobizitha Tshuma.

Tshuma spent money on the car to make it attractive and road-fit once more. When Shava saw it on the road, he became jealous and plotted a way to regain it.

Shava approached Tshuma's mother demanding a $1 000 top-up or else he would get his car back. To maintain peace, Tshuma suggested that instead, Shava should pay him back the initial $600 and also costs of repairing the car if he wanted it.

The matter has since spilled to the courts after the two failed to agree.

"Shava sold the car to me for $600 and I had to replace the tyres and fix the faulty steering wheel among other things. But when he saw the car on the road he came to my place and said his car was now worth $1 600 as its value had increased," said Tshuma appearing before Bulawayo resident magistrate Gladmore Mushove.

But it turned out there was no written agreement of sale. Tshuma argued that they dealt together out of trust.

"I trusted him and when I paid him he told me that he had left the card with the chassis number and registration book at home your honour. He had worked for my friend for close to two years and was a loyal employee but I think greed led him to turn on me," said Tshuma.

According to Shava's police statement read in court, he claims to have not advertised the car but had asked his boss to get it repaired.

The court heard that apparently Shava reported the theft to the police the same day he was relieved from his kombi driving duty by his employer who is friends with Tshuma. He also accused them of conniving to steal his car.

But Tshuma said Shava was daydreaming.

"I don't understand why he says I stole the car. Why would I drive 40 kilometres to Umguza to steal a non-runner? If he wants the car he should just pay back my money," declared Tshuma.

The matter was postponed to 2 October 2017.
