Petina Gappah, the Zimbabwean international law expert who courted controversy after being hired to organise President Emmerson Mnangagwa's participation at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, has hit out at Movement for Democratic Change for criticizing President Emmerson Mnangagwa for necessary travel.

The prizewinning Zimbabwean author said on Twitter, "MDC is criticizing ED for necessary travel. How did they think the reengagement they proposed in their 2013 manifesto would work? Did they think Zim would be part of some global WhatsApp group? Is ED supposed to just retweet stuff from Munhumutapa and make lots of Facebook LOLs?"

Laruka The Bale compared Gappah to renowned Zimbabwe presidential spin doctor George Charamba and she said it was quite a compliment to be compared to Mr Charamba, propagandist extraordinaire.

"As said before you sound just as Charamba, do you recall that moment Charamba was defending RGM's trip to India?"

Gappah said, "It is quIte a compliment to be compared to Mr Charamba, propagandist extraordinaire :) THANK YOU!!  I hope he will be as flattered with the comparison as I am when I tell him!!"

Gappah - a trenchant critic of the ruling party under deposed former president Robert Mugabe and an erstwhile pro-democracy activist who has previously championed the cause of the main opposition party, the MDC - has emerged as a communications expert for Mnangagwa to help him meet and discuss global issues with influencers from all over the world.

Gappah is part of the Zimbabwe Business Club, a new business initiative which is a local version of the WEF, albeit on a smaller scale.

She has previously worked with government on a number of once-off projects, even during the Mugabe era.
