Sniffer dogs detect 16 possible bodies of Cyclone Idai victims

At least 16 suspected bodies were identified in Ngangu area in Chimanimani on the first search day since the arrival of sniffer dogs in the area on Thursday.
Optimism of recovering more bodies trapped under the rubbles is getting high with each passing day in Ngangu as on Thursday at least 16 spots suspected to be holding human bodies were identified.
Search and Recovery Team Leader Justin Colbert who is leading a team of six experts and two sniffer dogs said the progress made so far is encouraging despite the fact that huge stones and massive debris is slowing their pace.
"16 suspected bodies were identified today and with the right support we are receiving, we hope to find more," said Colbert.
Mr Colbert thanked government agencies and community members for uniting towards one cause saying the support they have received so far is overwhelming.
Chimanimani East legislator Joshua Sacco commended the good work being done on the ground and has appealed to government and private partners to assist with earth-moving machines to recover the bodies from the identified spots.
"We are now appealing to government to make available recovery machines to rescue the identified bodies," said Honourable Sacco.
The 12-member search and recovery delegation is working across all the affected regions in the country while the rest of the team totalling 60 members are carrying similar task in Mozambique.
