THE Movement for Democratic Change, has scoffed at claims its congress procedures are being manipulated in particular to facilitate party leader Nelson Chamisa's unchallenged election at the elective indaba on May 24.

MDC National Organising Secretary, Amos Chibaya, said the party's Organising department runs the Congress in strict compliance to the MDC constitution and the template adopted by the party.

"Once a province meets the quorum, the Congress must and will continue until it is finished. To date, the Organising department has run 1950 ward Congresses, 210 district Congresses and 7 provincial Congresses.

Due to the discipline of our party cadres, there has not been an outbreak of violence anywhere.

"We have an immediate appeals structure in our constitution to deal with any complains that may arise during the process. As such complaints after the process have to be in writing and will be dealt with according to our constitution.

"We are pleased to announce that, we have received none such complains about the ongoing provincial Congresses and therefore commend the spirit of peace and camaraderie and urge our members to remain calm as we wind up this defining moment."

Douglas Mwonzora, the party secretary general, who was expected to challenge Chamisa for the MDC presidency at the weekend told party supporters that he had thrown in the towel and would now contest for his current post.

The former Nyanga North MP, was yet to be nominated for the presidency amid claims Chamisa and those close to the 41 year-old leader had made it "almost impossible for anyone else to be nominated."

On Monday, Mwonzora claiming he had pulled out of the presidential race in protest.

"Under the current process, I am no longer interested in the presidential race because certain concerns that I raised internally with the independent commission have not been redressed.

"These were confidential internal matters but if we fail to address them, they have the effect of dividing the party and I don't want to be part of that division. It is for that reason that I am no longer interested in the presidential race," said Mwonzora without elaborating.
