CHAOS reigned supreme during the MDC Masvingo provincial congress after the party disqualified Tongai Matutu from contesting for the post of provincial chairperson.
Matutu, who was squaring off against James Gumbi, was disqualified because he doesn't have five years in the party after he defected to former MDC secretary general Tendai Biti's People Democratic Party (PDP) before returning to the opposition party two years ago.
MDC spokesperson Jacob Mafume told the Daily News yesterday that the party just followed its laws.
"Matutu was not disqualified. There is a template, according to the template, he did not qualify.
He could apply for a waiver for that five-year period, he opted not to apply," Mafume said.
After the announcement of Matutu's disqualification, there was chaos as some were trying to protest the decision.
This comes amid complaints from MDC secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora that the playing ground was uneven.
Mwonzora, along with MDC vice president Elias Mudziri, had initially thrown their hat into the ring, declaring their ambition to take over from MDC president Nelson Chamisa as president of the country's biggest opposition party.
