A witness, Mr Fortune Bosha, said Chanetsa was a habitual thief who frequently stole car parts and clothes.

"We buried a relative yesterday and this man probably knows what happens at this house and thought we had dispersed. We were sitting around the fire and heard a sudden thud and realised that someone had jumped over the security wall.

"He could not give us a convincing answer before trying to flee.

"He stole several goods from this house like car batteries and clothes. At one time, elders left children when they travelled to South Africa and he tried to break into the house through the window threatening to assault them."

Mr Desire Dambuza said Chanetsa gave conflicting statements with regards to what he wanted and where he was coming from.

"After asking him questions he said he was coming from his girlfriend's place where they had a feud and wanted to warm himself at the fire.

"The second time he told us that he passed-by while on his way from a night-club at Machipisa shopping centre," he said.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau confirmed the incident.
