BARELY a week after Styx Mhlanga was arrested, celebrated Amakhosi director Cont Mhlanga was yesterday picked up by the police in a case involving US$5000 he owes a city man, and by time of going to press he was still behind bars.
The Criminal Investigation department's spokesperson Detective Inspector Augustin Zimbili confirmed that Mhlanga was picked up for questioning.
"It is alleged that the accused approached the complainant and borrowed money for Inxusa Expo in preperation for the Fifa 2010 World Cup which was held in South Africa.
"Mhlanga was given US$5000 on the understanding that he was going to pay back the money soon after Inxusa.
"However, af ter being given the money, Mhlanga did not hold Inxusa but instead converted money into his own use. He failed to pay back the money and the profit as had been the arrangement," Det Insp Zimbili confirmed.
A police source told B- Metro that Mhlanga, nicknamed the Wole Soyinka of Zimbabwe, borrowed money from a city man in the year 2009. When he took the money he claimed that he wanted to fund Inxusa Expo. However, the Expo failed to get underway. Eversince then the veteran artiste has been pushing forward the date for his much aclaimed expo that was a hit in the early 90s.
"Mhlanga was taken to the police because of money that he owes. He borrowed US$5000. Mhlanga and the guy who got him arrested (name could not be verified by time of going to press) have been at loggerheards about money to an extent that the guy took the matter to us," said a police officer.
Mhlanga's failure to pay the debt stretching for two years has forced the issue into extra time.
The police source added that Mhlanga pleaded with the man who got him arrested to agree that the artiste should come up with a payment plan.
"Cont asked for the assistance of some lawyers to draw up a payment plan," he said.
His wife Thembi Ngwabi confirmed that her husband was picked up.
"He was picked up by the police for questioning," she said.
This time around Mhlanga is up against a small figure compared to the US$50 000 he won at the inaugural $50,000 Freedom to Create Prize in 2008.
