CHITUNGWIZA Residents Trust (Chitrest) director Alice Kuvheya was yesterday arrested and detained at St Mary's Police Station for allegedly expressing reservations over the ongoing demolition of illegal structures in the dormitory town.

Kuvheya's lawyer, Freddy Masarirevu confirmed the incident last night.

"We have been referred back to St Mary's Police Station. They have played a video circulating on social media several times where she was challenging demolition of people's property without following due process, but we still cannot find anything wrong," Masarirevu said.

"Alice was saying the local authority must follow due process and not demolish property since the people had proper council documentation."

Officer-in-Charge St Mary's Police Station, Chief Inspector Modwick Musonza said Kuvheya was being charged with contravening section 187(1) of the Maintenance of Public Order Act, which is incitement to public violence.

Kuvheya's arrest came a few days after residents successfully challenged the demolition exercise, with the High Court ruling that the demolitions were unlawful in the absence of a court order.
