The tentative date for the burial of national hero Joshua Malinga has been set for Saturday at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, according to his family.
Malinga, aged 79, passed away from prostate cancer last Friday, and President Mnangagwa declared him a national hero in recognition of his efforts in advocating for minority rights.
At the time of his death, Malinga served as a Special Advisor to President Mnangagwa, focusing on disability-related issues, and he was praised for his outstanding service in this role.
The Zanu-PF Bulawayo province conveyed the national hero status to Malinga's family at their Richmond suburb residence. During the visit, Molly Mpofu, a Zanu-PF Politburo member, read the Presidential message and handed the letter to Malinga's widow.
Malinga's brother, Shadreck Malinga, expressed gratitude for the national hero status conferred on his brother and mentioned that the family was coordinating with the government regarding the burial arrangements. While the proposed date for the burial is Saturday, there may be changes in the coming days.
Jabulani Sibanda, the Zanu-PF Bulawayo provincial chairman, praised Malinga's contributions to Bulawayo's development during his tenure as mayor. He cited improvements such as the construction of new clinics and the development of Siyephambili Drive. Sibanda emphasized the importance of recognizing heroes who have made significant contributions to the nation.
Angelina Masuku, a member of the Zanu-PF Council of Elders, commended President Mnangagwa for honoring Malinga with national hero status. She highlighted Malinga's selfless leadership, noting his willingness to seek advice and his dedication to serving the public.
During a special council meeting in Bulawayo to elect a mayor and deputy mayor, Bulawayo City Council (BCC) observed a minute of silence in honor of Malinga. The newly elected mayor, Councillor David Coltart, acknowledged the meaningful friendship he shared with Malinga, emphasizing their shared commitment to serving the country.
Bulawayo town clerk, Christopher Dube, acknowledged Malinga's contributions to the city's development. Malinga had served as a Councillor for Ward 2 and held various positions within the council, including deputy mayor and mayor of the City of Bulawayo. His involvement in numerous council committees and external bodies showcased his dedication to community service.
Malinga's legacy extends beyond his mayoral role, as he actively promoted the rights of persons with disabilities in Bulawayo and nationally. His passing is deeply mourned, and heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues.
