A Mt Darwin man, Wellington Gwashure, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the vicious murder of his wife, Eustina Mutiwekuziva, following a domestic dispute that stemmed from his infidelity.

Gwashure, of Gocha Village, was found guilty of the October 2022 murder during a trial at the High Court in Harare. The case laid bare a history of abuse and intimidation, culminating in a brutal attack that shocked the community.

A Fatal Confrontation

The incident began when Mutiwekuziva confronted Gwashure, attempting to stop him from visiting his girlfriend in a neighboring village. The altercation escalated when Gwashure attacked her with his fists and wooden sticks, delivering blows so severe that she was left unconscious.

Court testimony revealed that Gwashure then dragged his wife's lifeless body into the courtyard of their homestead, where he placed her and their toddler under a single blanket. Hours later, he casually informed a neighbor, Innocent Gocha, about the assault. By the time Gocha arrived, Mutiwekuziva had succumbed to her injuries.

A post-mortem examination conducted at Chimhanda Hospital detailed the horrific nature of the attack, including deep lacerations, ruptured eyes, and multiple traumatic injuries.

Years of Abuse

The court heard that the murder was the culmination of years of domestic abuse. Witnesses described Gwashure as a notorious bully within his community, instilling fear among family members and neighbors alike. Even his uncle testified to fleeing the house upon hearing Gwashure's raised voice.

Despite this history, Gwashure denied the charges in court, claiming provocation. He alleged that he acted out of anger during the confrontation.

Justice Served

Justice Munamato Mutevedzi, presiding over the case with assessors Mrs. Chitsiga and Mr. Chimonyo, dismissed Gwashure's defense, ruling that his actions were premeditated and deliberate. The court noted that his intoxication at the time did not mitigate his culpability.

"The loss of human life through violence must always be frowned upon," Justice Mutevedzi said during sentencing. "The courts must strive to pass sentences that send a clear message to would-be offenders that severe punishments await those who take another's life."

The court described Gwashure's defense as fabricated and found his actions to be a disproportionate and calculated response to his wife's inquiry about his plans.

Community Outrage

The case has left the Mt Darwin community reeling, highlighting the pervasive issue of domestic violence. Village head Mr. Farai Dzapasi called the killing a tragic reminder of the urgent need for intervention and support for abuse victims.

"This tragedy underscores the importance of addressing abuse before it escalates to such irreversible consequences," Dzapasi said.

The sentencing serves as a stark warning against domestic violence, with the courts affirming their commitment to justice for victims of such heinous acts.
