In a remarkable display of commitment to education, Chief Ngungumbane of Mberengwa District has not only established himself as a respected traditional leader but also as a beacon of academic excellence. Recently, he achieved a milestone that has set him apart from many of his peers-he earned a Doctorate in Peace and Governance from the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU).
To celebrate this rare accomplishment, Chief Dr. Ngungumbane hosted a graduation party at his homestead in Mberengwa, attended by fellow chiefs, academics, friends, and family members. This achievement cements his position as one of the few traditional leaders in Zimbabwe to hold such a prestigious qualification and highlights his role as a trailblazer among his peers.
Chief Dr. Ngungumbane's academic journey is truly exceptional. With five degrees to his name, his credentials include a PhD in Peace and Governance, a Master's degree, and three Bachelor's degrees in Law, Psychology, and Honors in Psychology. He also holds a Bachelor of Laws Honours Degree from the University of South Africa (Unisa), further showcasing his dedication to education and his role as an advocate for lifelong learning.
In an interview with Chronicle, Chief Dr. Ngungumbane expressed his desire to lead by example and become a role model for his community and beyond. "I have five degrees, and I just want to be a role model in my community and beyond," he said. His academic excellence is evident in his impressive record, including 16 distinctions out of 40 in his law degree.
Despite the challenges posed by balancing his traditional leadership responsibilities, Parliamentary duties, and family life, Chief Dr. Ngungumbane persevered. "The Covid-19 pandemic did affect my studies, but I am grateful that I achieved my goals," he reflected.
Chief Dr. Ngungumbane, born Zama Ntua, also shared a unique aspect of his personal life. He revealed that he and his twin brother, Mzweli, overcame the typical challenges faced by twins, especially in terms of succession. Their birth certificates were pragmatically designated as "twin one" and "twin two," ensuring clarity and avoiding any potential complications in their future roles.
"My twin brother is in Bulawayo, and he supports me very much," he said, emphasizing the strong bond between the two.
Dr. Barbara Mbuyisa from ZOU praised Chief Dr. Ngungumbane's academic accomplishments, highlighting their importance in promoting good governance and addressing societal challenges. "Education empowers us to foster peace, uphold justice, and contribute to nation-building," she said, further noting that today's traditional leaders are increasingly essential in addressing contemporary societal issues.
Chief Ntabeni, who represented the Chiefs Council at the ceremony, also commended Chief Ngungumbane's discipline and leadership qualities. "I have worked well with him in Parliament for several years. Despite him being younger, I would take orders from him, and I respect him," he said.
The ceremony was further graced by praise poetry from Mr. Mathamsanga Mkhwananzi, a representative from Ngungumbane Secondary School, who celebrated the Chief's achievements in a captivating performance.
