Zimbabwe braces for heavy rains over Christmas

The Meteorological Service Department (MSD) has issued a weather warning for widespread rains across Zimbabwe during the Christmas and Boxing Day holidays, urging the public to exercise caution, particularly when crossing rivers, to avoid tragic accidents.
This warning follows a devastating incident in Gwanda, Matabeleland South, on Monday, where a Green Horse long-distance bus was swept away by a flooded river. The tragic accident claimed the life of a 33-year-old woman, and a three-month-old baby remains missing.
According to the MSD, heavy rains are expected to persist across the country today and tomorrow, with thunderstorms and the possibility of flooding in several areas.
"Countrywide rains are expected on Christmas and Boxing Day," the MSD stated. "On Christmas Day, partly cloudy and mild conditions are expected across the country, with chances of morning rain in some areas. In the afternoon, widespread thunderstorms are anticipated, followed by overnight partly cloudy and mild conditions in the northern parts of the country."
The department also urged the public to remain vigilant during the festive period, as similar weather patterns are expected throughout the holiday.
On Monday, many regions recorded heavy rainfall, including Gokwe, which received 44mm, Goetz in Bulawayo with 32mm, and Kwekwe, Mukandi, and West Nicholson each receiving 20mm.
The MSD also noted that thunderstorms developed throughout the afternoon across various regions.
In response to the weather warnings, Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mhlangano Moyo has cautioned residents to prepare for potential flash floods.
"The weather forecast indicates a wet Christmas, so we are sensitising residents to be alert," said Mr. Moyo. "Homeowners in flood-prone areas should open weep holes in precast walls to allow water to flow freely."
He further warned that failure to comply with this requirement could result in a US$150 fine.
Mr. Moyo also discouraged residents from crossing flooded rivers, particularly at Phekiwe River, which has posed challenges for commuters traveling between Emganwini and Nkulumane.
With the holiday season upon the country, the authorities are urging the public to stay informed of weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and prioritize safety to prevent further tragedies.
