A 60-year-old Bulawayo woman appeared in court facing charges of physical abuse after allegedly assaulting and pouring hot water on her son's girlfriend, whom she accused of being a witch.

Barbra Ndlovu, a resident of Nketa suburb, was not asked to plead when she appeared before Western Commonage magistrate, Mrs. Lenia Khumalo. She was granted free bail and is set to return to court on February 4.

According to the state's case, presented by prosecutor Ms. Mandrela Chisiiwa, the incident occurred on January 18 when the complainant, Martha Sibanda, visited Ndlovu's home to see her boyfriend.

While Sibanda was in her boyfriend's bedroom, Ndlovu allegedly barged into the room and started accusing her of witchcraft, claiming she had bewitched her son. As Sibanda attempted to leave the house, the accused allegedly poured hot water on her neck, causing burns.

The court also heard that Ndlovu proceeded to assault Sibanda with a mug before the matter was reported to the police, leading to her arrest.

The case has drawn public attention, with concerns being raised over accusations of witchcraft leading to violence. The trial is expected to proceed next month.
