Tsholotsho police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident involving a donkey-drawn scotch cart that occurred on Sunday, February 9, in the Mazibulala Line area.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), a 23-year-old man was run over by the cart and died instantly. The driver of the scotch cart did not stop after the accident, and authorities are working to identify and locate those responsible.
In a separate incident, ZRP Bulawayo Traffic West is investigating another hit-and-run accident that took place along Ngwenya Road near Goveya Shops on Saturday. An unknown motorist struck a 30-year-old man and sped off, leaving him with severe head injuries. Police are appealing for information to help track down the suspect.
The Road Traffic Act Chapter 13:11, Section 70 outlines the legal responsibilities of drivers involved in accidents. Section 70(2) mandates that drivers must stop immediately if their vehicle is involved in an accident that results in injury, property damage, or the death of a person or animal. Failure to stop is a serious criminal offence commonly referred to as a hit-and-run.
Drivers involved in accidents must assess whether anyone has been injured or killed and provide assistance where possible. In the event of a fatality, the law requires them to take reasonable measures to protect the scene until authorities arrive.
Police have urged motorists and all road users to abide by traffic laws and report accidents promptly. They also warned against tampering with evidence at accident scenes, as this is a criminal offence.
Investigations into both hit-and-run incidents are ongoing, and the ZRP is appealing to members of the public with any relevant information to come forward.
