Six people lost their lives on Sunday evening in a horrific road accident involving a Honda Fit and a heavy truck along the Mutare-Harare Highway near Yorkshire in Headlands.
The crash occurred at approximately 7:30 PM at the 142-kilometre peg, claiming the lives of all six occupants of the Honda Fit, including the driver.
According to preliminary police investigations, the Honda Fit was travelling towards Rusape when it attempted to overtake a tractor on a blind curve and veered into the path of an oncoming Sino Howo truck belonging to Chris Logistics, which was heading towards Harare.
The impact was devastating. The smaller vehicle became trapped under the truck and was dragged for nearly 50 metres, causing severe damage and fatal injuries to all those aboard.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the accident in an official statement released Monday.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 142 kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road on 22nd June 2025, at around 1930 hours, where six people died after a Honda Fit vehicle collided head-on with a Sino Howo truck," said Commissioner Nyathi.
"The driver of the Honda Fit vehicle was driving towards Mutare with five passengers on board. On approaching a blind curve, he attempted to overtake a tractor while there was an oncoming Sino Howo truck, resulting in a head-on collision."
The bodies of the deceased were transported to Rusape General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations. Police said the names of the victims will be released once their next of kin have been informed.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly when overtaking and navigating blind curves, warning that reckless driving continues to be a major cause of fatalities on the country's highways.
The accident adds to growing concerns over the safety of small vehicles on Zimbabwe's roads, especially those like the Honda Fit, which are frequently overloaded and involved in high-speed collisions.
