Gweru to set up modern crematorium

The Gweru City Council has announced plans to establish a modern crematorium at one of its cemeteries as part of efforts to improve burial services in the city.

Mayor Martin Chivhoko confirmed the development during an interview yesterday, revealing that the crematorium forms part of the council's long-term strategy to modernise its cemeteries.

"Yes, we have plans for a modern crematorium at one of our cemeteries," said Chivhoko.

He added that ongoing maintenance work is underway across the city's burial grounds, including grass cutting, bush clearing, and road rehabilitation. The council also intends to erect fences around cemeteries and construct ablution facilities and waiting rooms to improve the comfort and dignity of mourners.

The local authority is also working on implementing a computerised system to manage graves and burial records more efficiently.

Like many other municipalities in Zimbabwe, Gweru faces challenges due to the high demand for burial space, complicated by the general reluctance among Zimbabweans to embrace cremation because of cultural beliefs.

In response to the council's plans, David Chikore, director of the Gweru United Progressive Residents and Ratepayers Development Association, urged the council to prioritise the maintenance of cemeteries.

"The cemeteries in the city are in a sorry state," Chikore said.

"Council should ensure that the graveyards are maintained to higher standards. We should learn to respect the dead by maintaining cemeteries in the city."

Chikore also highlighted the lack of ablution facilities at cemeteries, which forces mourners to seek relief in the bush during burial ceremonies — a situation he described as disheartening.

As the council advances its plans, residents hope for a balance between modern burial solutions and cultural sensitivities, alongside improved cemetery upkeep.
