Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday sent a message to veterans of Zimbabwe's national liberation struggle, praising their sacrifices and reaffirming the long-standing friendship between China and Zimbabwe.
In his letter, Xi acknowledged that in their youth, the veterans dedicated themselves to national liberation, leaving their homes to fight for freedom while forging a profound bond with China. "To this day, they remain deeply committed to China-Zimbabwe and China-Africa friendship, which is deeply moving," Xi said.
The Chinese President highlighted that 2026 marks both the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and African nations and the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges. He noted that over the past seven decades, China has consistently supported Africa's struggles for national liberation, development, and rejuvenation. "China and its African friends have respected and supported each other, weathered arduous times together, and jointly embarked on a new journey toward modernization," Xi stated.
Xi reaffirmed China's readiness to implement the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation as a means to strengthen traditional friendship and jointly build a brighter future for China-Africa relations. He expressed hope that the Zimbabwean veterans will inspire a new generation of African youth to dedicate themselves to fostering China-Zimbabwe and China-Africa ties.
With the Chinese New Year of the Horse approaching, Xi invoked the symbolism of the dragon and the horse, urging both sides to carry forward a spirit of tireless collaboration. "We will work together to build an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era, and write a new chapter in China-Africa friendship," he said.
The letter comes in response to correspondence from the veterans, who thanked Xi for China's support during Zimbabwe's liberation struggle, expressed admiration for his leadership, and pledged to continue strengthening the Zimbabwe-China relationship.
Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the country has maintained support for Africa's liberation movements, a legacy that Xi said continues to underpin the "all-weather" partnership between China and Zimbabwe.
