Thousands of families across Zimbabwe received food hampers yesterday from a Turkish Muslim humanitarian organisation, marking this year's Ramadan celebrations. The distributions were carried out without regard to religion or political affiliation, reflecting the spirit of generosity associated with the Islamic holy month.

Ramadan, a period of fasting, spiritual reflection, and prayer, carries this year the theme "Hope," symbolised by the tulip as a representation of renewal, divine rhythm, and the eternal return to life and light. The theme underscores hope in Allah, humanity, and the power of community, encouraging collective support and care.

During the hamper distribution in Shamva, Abdurrahman Taha Çınar, Religious Affairs Coordinator at the Turkish Embassy, said the initiative reflects the enduring friendship and sacred trust between Zimbabwe and Türkiye. "These donations are a sacred trust from our supporters in Türkiye to the people of Zimbabwe. Through the organisation of the Presidency of Religious Affairs and the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation, these entrusted contributions were delivered to the country," he said. "This Ramadan initiative stands as a strong symbol of solidarity and enduring friendship between the two nations."

Mr Çınar noted that local partners were engaged to ensure the hampers reached those most in need. He also highlighted Türkiye's broader humanitarian support, including the drilling of motorised boreholes across rural Zimbabwe to complement government efforts in providing clean water. On educational cooperation, he mentioned that hundreds of Zimbabwean students have received opportunities to pursue studies in Türkiye across various fields.

In Norton, Sheikh Adam Wadi reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to working with the Zimbabwean government to empower communities and support the nation's Vision 2030 goal of achieving middle-income economy status.

Recipients expressed deep gratitude and encouraged other religious and humanitarian organisations to emulate the initiative. "This is a good gesture for communities that many organisations and institutions should copy in uplifting livelihoods and shaping community development," said Ms Fatima Golosi, 69, from Chiwaridzo in Bindura.
