The Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Mineral Workers Union (Zdamwu) has taken its fight for workers’ rights to the international stage after participating in a major conference in France, where global unions pressed for stronger human rights due diligence (HRDD) mechanisms that deliver real change for workers.

Zdamwu general secretary Justice Chinhema, writing on Facebook after his return from Paris, said he had joined more than 100 unionists and experts from around the world for the final ABC of RBC conference hosted by IndustriALL Global Union and IndustriALL Europe.

“The focus was clear: how do we make Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) a tool that delivers real change for workers, not just another compliance checklist?” he said.

Chinhema said he shared experiences from Zimbabwe’s mining sector, where violations of workers’ fundamental rights remain common.

“HRDD will only be meaningful if it reaches the realities on the ground. What stood out for me is that we need strong unions at every level of the supply chain, starting from where production takes place, working together systematically,” he said.

He emphasised that workers must be trained, organised and empowered to use HRDD as leverage.

“It was an insightful and empowering conference. For me, the key takeaway is simple: HRDD is compliance — but when workers are organised, it becomes leverage for real change,” Chinhema said.
