BCC plans crackdown on illegal butcheries in Cowdray Park

The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) is preparing an interdepartmental enforcement operation targeting illegal butcheries in Cowdray Park following complaints from residents about the growing number of unlicensed meat outlets in the suburb.

According to the latest council report, authorities launched investigations after receiving an anonymous complaint regarding the proliferation of informal butcheries operating in the high-density suburb.

The investigations confirmed the concerns raised by residents, prompting the local authority to initiate plans for a coordinated enforcement exercise.

"Investigations were done and the complaint proved to be genuine. An interdepartmental blitz is being planned to combat these illegal activities," the report stated.

Council officials said the operation will involve several municipal departments working together to identify businesses operating without the required licences and to enforce compliance with public health regulations and municipal by-laws.

The rise of illegal butcheries has become a growing concern for authorities due to the potential health risks associated with the sale of meat that may not have undergone proper inspection or been handled in accordance with prescribed hygiene standards.

Public health experts have warned that unregulated meat outlets can expose consumers to food-borne illnesses if products are sourced, stored or processed under unsafe conditions.
