Two men drowned in Lake Kariba after the canoe they were using to cross the water body capsized on Saturday afternoon.

Confirming the incident, Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Billie Dube said the two men, Siyalunda Denes Ncube (54) of Gobo village under Chief

Siabuwa and Ephraim Mapande (38) of Msinampongo village under Chief Sikalange, drowned in Lake Kariba near Chilula Fishing Camp.

"The incident occurred around 4pm when the canoe they were using to cross the lake capsized due to strong waves.

"The two men had hired Mr Lovemore Tshuma (31) to assist them in crossing the lake from Chilula Fishing Camp to Twite Fishing Camp where they were employed.

"It is alleged that in the middle of the lake the canoe capsized which forced the three men overboard.

"The three men began swimming towards the shore but unfortunately Siyalunda Ncube and Ephraim Mapande got tired and drowned," said Insp Dube.

He said Mr Tshuma managed to get assistance from two fishermen who rescued him and took him to Chilula Fishing Camp.

"A report was then made to the police at Binga police station, who recovered the bodies of the deceased on 29 March.

"Both bodies were still intact with no major injuries. They were then taken to Binga Hospital for post mortems," he said.
