Zanu-PF bigwigs sail through
17 Jun 2013 at 07:59hrs | Views
A number of Zanu-PF sitting legislators sailed through the nomination process conducted over the weekend unopposed after either no one expressed interest in their seats or those who proffered their names were disqualified for various reasons.
The nominations were conducted in a peaceful manner, compared with the MDC-T primaries and confirmations that were rocked by widespread violence that left the Western-sponsored party deeply divided.
Vice President Joice Mujuru is the party's candidate in Mt Darwin West for the harmonised elections set for July 31 after she filed her curriculum vitae unopposed in Bindura.
The revolutionary party is expected to release the full list of the candidates to contest the primaries elections and those who sailed through unopposed today.
Meanwhile, aspiring Zanu-PF candidates for the harmonised elections must have served the party for at least 5 years, but the requirements can be waived by provincial committees for certain candidates.
This is among various conditions announced by the party's national chairman Simon Khaya Moyo at a press conference attended by secretary for the Commissariat Webster Shamu and spokesperson Rugare Gumbo.
The rules and regulations would govern the conduct of primaries slated for June 24 ahead of harmonised elections.
Zanu-PF on Saturday requested all candidates who will participate in its primary elections to sign a strict code of conduct that disqualifies them from the poll if they sponsor political violence or cause chaos.
Those who submitted their curriculum vitae during Saturday's application process were also required to sign oaths of loyalty to the party, stating their continued allegiance regardless of the primary election outcome.
Losing candidates and winners are also expected to work together when focus turns to national elections.
