Government says plans are underway for the renaming of King George VI Barracks to Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks.

In a speech read on his behalf at the commemorations held in honour of the late national hero held at KG6 in Harare by the acting Commander Defence Forces Air Marshall Perence Shiri, Defence Minister Sydney Sekeramayi  said it is important to preserve the history of the former ZANLA commander.

Dr Sekeramayi said the proposal to rename KG6 barracks in honour of the late nationalist is an important gesture to recognise the liberation icon popularly known as Tongo.

During the commemorations, former freedom fighters in the struggle also put up a light hearted performance on the stage as they sang revolutionary songs.

The commemorations were held by the Zimbabwe National Army and the Josiah Magama Tongogara Foundation.

This year marks the 34th anniversary of the death of the late Tongo who perished in a car accident on December 26 1979, a few days after the Lancaster House agreement was signed.
