A MUTARE woman who sent abusive text messages to the mobile phone of her husband's lover was dragged before Mutare magistrates' courts and convicted for contravening the Postal and Telecommunications Act.

Rachel Mundonga, 28, pleaded guilty to the charges when she appeared before magistrate Noah Gwatidzo on Monday.

She was fined $50 and slapped with a three month prison sentence which was wholly suspended on condition she does not commit a similar offence within five years.

Prosecutor Tinashe Katsiru told the court that sometime in December last year, Mundonga's husband, Washington left his phone at home and she took advantage of the opportunity to check his messages.

She then discovered texts from Hazvinei Rujeke, 29, a teacher at Vhengere high school in Rusape, which suggested she was having an affair with Washington.

Mundonga is reported to have texted Rujeke, insulted her using obscene language. She called her a "prostitute" who wanted to snatch her husband.

Unimpressed, Rujeke reported the abuse to the police.

Asked in court why she used obscene language, a visibly disturbed Mundonga said: "I was provoked and angered that the complainant was having an affair with my husband."

But magistrate Gwatidzo said ignorance was no defence before the law but considered that she was a family woman with two kids as well as a first offender.

"I have considered that you were provoked and you are a family woman. You should not commit offences of that nature over the next five years," said the magistrate.
