FC Platinum striking midfielder Ian Nekati (24) of Makwasha Suburb in Zvishavane appeared in court after he assaulted his girlfriend's lover who had found him cuddling his wife. Nekati appeared in court for assaulting Wise Chokuda (40) of Mandava Zvishavane on February 6, 2014.
Magistrate Peter Tomupeyi Madhibha sentenced Nekati to three months in prison or alternatively to pay a fine of $200.
The footballer, who seemingly joined the wrong 'profession', is not a stranger to beating up people. Nekati, who undoubtedly makes a good boxer, flew into a rage and bashed his defenceless wife for simply asking him why he had left her without money for food. His wife is only 19 years old.
It is the State case that on on 6 February, Chokuda found Nekati with Mrs Chokuda on the veranda. Prosecutor Stanely Ncube told the Court that it was in the afternoon when Chokuda came home early only to find his wife seated on Nekati's laps.
"I had been told that this lad had been in a relationship with my wife ever since we were Nekati's neighbours in Makwasha Zvishavane. Rumours alarmed me that the relationship continued even after we relocated to Mandava so I planned to come home early and true to the rumours, I caught the two red handed," said Chokuda.
Ncube said Chokuda tried to apprehend the two when Nekati pushed him and ran away. Chokuda was cut on his right hand and had a swollen knee as a result of the shove.
FC platinum's spokesperson Chido Muzondo said the case was a private matter but the team would counsel its player.
"We are treating our player's case as a personal case and besides Nekati's behaviour is not affecting his job so we are not going to pry into his private life. However, we are going to offer him some counselling so that he would be able to control his behaviour and besides, it's for the good of the team," said Muzondo.
Nekati, a regular bench warmer at the Zvishavane-based soccer outfit, had previously been convicted on his own plea of guilty for assaulting his wife before being to 45 days in prison.
His 19-year-old wife, Chisenga told the court that it was the third time she had suffered abuse at the hands of her husband.
Chisenga said: "This is not the first time I have suffered abuse at the hands of Nekati. In our two-year marriage, I have been beaten up three times."
