'Baba Jukwa' suspect bail hearing postponed

Bail application hearing for embattled Sunday Mail editor Edmund Kudzayi was early Friday postponed to 3 July after the state insisted that it needed time to study voluminous application submitted by defence council.

Kudzayi, 28 and his brother  Philip Tawanda Kudzayi are facing charges of planning to unseat a constitutional government through running a faceless Facebook page Baba Jukwa.

The state claims that Kudzayi, his brother and others still at large planned to unseat the government through unconstitutional means before July 31 2013 elections.

"Sometime in April 2013, the accused connived with his elder brother Philip Tawanda Kudzayi and others who are still at large and hatched a plan to overthrow the Government of Zimbabwe by unconstitutional means in the run up to the 31st July 2013 Zimbabwe General elections. Accused created a gmail account called babajukwa2013@gmail.com using an Econet line registered to Philip Tawanda Kudzayi which line is being used by him. The said gmail account was used to create a Facebook account called Baba Jukwa.

"The accused planned and organized with other accused persons calling themselves, The Gunda Nleya Brigade and Zimbabwe Revolutionary Army, to overthrow the Government through waging war and urged people to join the Zimbabwe Revolutionary Army.

"The accused posted articles on the Baba Jukwa Facebook page which encouraged rebellion against the Government if the said election is stolen. They also posted articles to the effect that they had a Dare Rechimurenga in place and that a team was on the ground studying the situation in Zimbabwe." a charge sheet availed to journalists stated.

According to the state, Kudzayi is also facing charges of contravening the Firearms Act after detectives who raided his house and workplace discovered 13 rounds of ammunition unsecured.

He is also facing charges of publishing or communicating falsehoods prejudicial to the state.

Before being appointed, a brief check of his history, Kudzayi once wrote an article on 7 August 2008, in which he described President Mugabe as a tyrant' who had stolen the 2008 elections, which the state is using as evidence against him.

Through his website in 2010, African Aristocrat which has now been pulled down ran an exclusive story saying Bona, the president's only daughter had been gang-raped by a group of Tanzanian students.
