AN association representing school development committees has warned MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai against staging nationwide street protests, saying this would cripple the education system.

The National Association of Schools Development Association Committee (Nasdac) said the protests will disturb students who are preparing for the end of year examinations.

Nasdac secretary-general Max Mnkandla said street marches were not the wisest idea at the moment and would only further increase the failure rate of learners in Matabeleland.

"Staging a demonstration at this time of the year when children are already preparing for examinations will be not wise, hence such actions are unwise," he said.

Tsvangirai has called for mass protests over the deteriorating economic situation in the country, characterised by company closures, resulting in massive job losses, among other ills.

"I am appealing to organisers of the intended event to think otherwise, as some people may take advantage of the situation and bring in arms of war," Mnkandla said.

"I am giving a word of advice, especially to Tsvangirai, he must first of all go to the congress and get proper guidance there.

"The demonstration will bring in some infiltrators who will destroy the party. I want to remind him of his words of removing President Robert Mugabe violently and what happened after that. People will take advantage of that and he must not forget the saga of (Ari) Ben Menashe that resulted in him been taken to court many times, even though he won the case it drained him."

Tsvangirai was charged and cleared on treason charges in the early part of last decade, after he was accused of recruiting Menashe to assist him in what was described as a coup and assassination plot.

A number of organisations, some of them seen as Tsvangirai allies, seem to be distancing themselves from the planned protests, although the MDC-T leader says he is pressing ahead.

Nasdac is the mother board that represents school development associations in the country.
