A 41-year-old unlicensed Harare driver who rammed the Minister of Home Affairs Dr Ignatius Chombo's vehicle, after losing control of his vehicle, has been fined $450 or alternatively seven months in jail for four offences.

Shupayi Maxwell Pfupajena (41) of Barmans Road, Bluffhill, was driving a Nissan Champ, while Minister Chombo was driving a Range Rover along Sam Nujoma Street.

Pfupajena appeared before magistrate Ms Vongai Muchuchuti who convicted him on his own plea of guilty. He pleaded guilty to driving without a licence, negligence, driving an uninsured vehicle and failure to display a vehicle licence disk.

On November 5 at around 8pm, Pfupajena was driving his Nissan Champ along Sam Nujoma Street in the inner lane and was speeding; he lost control of the vehicle and side-swiped to the outer lane, ramming the Range Rover driven by Minister Chombo.

Both vehicles sustained minor damages.

When police arrived, Pfupajena was ordered to produce his driver's licence but he failed to do so. Sergeant Matezwa from Avondale Police Station discovered that Pfupajena's vehicle was not insured and did not have the current vehicle licence.

Sgt Matezwa checked with the Central Vehicle Registration (CVR)and discovered that Pfupajena was not a licensed driver and had been caught driving without a valid licence.

Mr Oscar Madhume prosecuted.
