Three people died on Sunday while 15 others were injured when a commuter omnibus they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned, landing on its wheels after the driver lost control of the vehicle, along the Bindura-Shamva Road.

The Toyota Hiace commuter omnibus was travelling towards Shamva with 18 passengers on board.

Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the accident.

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to confirm the death of three people and the injury of 15 others in a road traffic accident involving a commuter omnibus which occurred at the 17km-peg along Bindura-Shamva Road on 31 January 2016 at around 3pm," she said.

"On approaching the 17km-peg, the vehicle had a rear left tyre burst and the driver lost control of the vehicle which then veered off the road and overturned before landing on its wheels. Two passengers died on the spot while the other one died on admission at Bindura General Hospital.

Meanwhile, Snr Asst Comm Charamba urged the public to comply with provisions of Section 52 of Statutory Instrument 129/5 which stipulates that no person shall drive a motor vehicle on roads unless two warning devices complying with the requirement of the section are carried in the vehicle.

"An equilateral triangle which is reflective on both sides bearing the name of its manufacturer and a serial number. The triangle shall be made of aluminum or flexible plastic which does not break easily," she said.

"Instructions on how to place the triangle including minimum distance from the vehicle must be affixed to the triangle in such a way not to obscure the reflective material.

"The triangle can incorporate glass type circular reflex reflectors at each apex. The edges of the triangle must be ridged to prevent the reflective material flaking off at the edges."
