The construction of the US$1.8 million new Pembi bridge in Mvurwi town along the Harare-Mvurwi highway has started.
This follows a recent visit to the site by Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Dr Joram Gumbo, where he expressed government's commitment to commence the construction of the Pembi bridge project which has been on the drawing board since 1977.
The narrow bridge currently in use has been the cause of many fatal road accidents.
"At the moment we are doing site establishment which is the first stage of any project as well has setting out the exact location of the bridge and this is expected to take us about two weeks, said Joyline Samusodza, the Resident Engineer for Mashonaland Central Province.
Depending on the availability of the resources, the new Pembi bridge project is expected to take eight months.
