Burial society treasurer blowing $2,400, makes false police report

A BURIAL society treasurer in Bulawayo allegedly embezzled $2,400 and made a false theft report to the police in a bid to cover up the offence.
Jausironi Jongwe, 68, of Pumula suburb, allegedly converted the society's funds to his own use and lied that the money had been stolen in a kombi. He claimed he was on his way to deposit the money in a bank.
The court heard that Jongwe had been assigned by the Chirumanzu Brothers and Sisters burial society members to deposit the money into their account at Stanbic Bank.
Western Commonage magistrate Tancy Dube did not ask Jongwe to plead and remanded him out of custody to April 18. Jongwe is facing charges of theft and deliberately supplying false information to a public authority.
Prosecuting, Tendai Binha told the court that Jongwe was entrusted by the burial society members to keep $2,400 to cater for funeral expenses.
"During the month of February, the burial society held a meeting where it was resolved that the money be taken to the bank. The accused person agreed to deposit the money as instructed," said Binha.
The prosecutor said on March 1 at around 2.50PM, Jongwe, realising that he had spent all the society money, went to Pumula Police Station to make a false police report to cover up the crime.
The prosecutor said nothing was recovered.
