MANGWE - MORE than 1 000 people thronged Sanzukwi Business Centre in Mangwe District on Saturday 26 December 2011 to attend a Zapu rally addressed by party president, Dr Dumiso Dabengwa.
Sanzukwi is the home village of Zanu-PF Simon Khaya-Moyo. Dr Dabengwa told the crowd that Zapu was ready to take over government and implement its policy of devolution of power to the five regions, namely, Mashonaland, Masvingo, Manicaland, Matabeleland and Midlands.
"Everyone knows that Zapu was robbed of victory in 1980, after our party literally liberated the country and was ready to form a government. Others with long knives came and skinned the elephant that we killed while we watched. We grudgingly joined Zanu-PF in the unity government thinking they would give us a chance. We were patient since 1987 up to 2008. This time we are not willing to make way for anyone. It is Zapu's time. Only Zapu can implement a Zapu programme," he said to cheers from the crowd.
Dr Dabengwa appealed for non-violence.
"The time for barbarism came and went. Don't be intimidated by anyone. Go and register to vote and make sure that Zapu wins."
He added that Zapu wanted to empower communities through giving them rights over their resources. Dr Dabengwa said indications were that elections would be held in 2013.
Zapu secretary for security, Ekem Nkala also addressed the meeting and called for peace.
"Zapu is for peace. We will never harass or beat up anyone to force them to support our party. We hope no one will use violence against us anywhere," Nkala said.
Provincial chairperson of Zawu, Zapu's women league, Mrs Ottilia Ngwenya challenged women to join Zapu in numbers.
"Zapu is the natural choice for the people of Matabeleland South province. Women must join in large numbers to ensure equal representation in the party," Mrs Ngwenya said.
Zapu Youth Front provincial chairperson, Mr Canicious Nkala expressed happiness about the large turnout of the youths.
"We need more youths because we are the leaders of today and elders of tomorrow. Zapu runs in our blood," Mr Nkala said.
Zapu National People's Council national chairperson, Mr Isaac Mabuka, Zapu National Council of Elders executive member Mr John Maluzo Ndlovu, provincial chairman, Mr Joachim Trust Moyo and his council of elders counter, Mr Percy Bhebhe, also attended the meeting.
