A Dose Of Motivation From The Motivator: Fix The Man

One of the ingredients of developing the essential flexibility and adaptability strategies is dealing with that person who looks at you every time you look at the mirror. I heard a story about a boy who wanted to play with his dad.

However his dad was too busy to attend to him. In an attempt to get rid of his son who was pestering him, the dad thought of an activity that could keep the boy busy for a while. He took a page of a newspaper that had a picture of a bulb and tore it into small pieces.

He gave the boy the pieces of paper and asked him to join them together, thinking that it would take the boy quite some time to solve the puzzle.

Surprisingly the boy was right back in less than a minute, with the pieces of a bulb fitted together. The surprised dad asked his son how he had managed to fit the torn pieces together within such a short time.

The boy told the dad that he had not dealt with the picture of a bulb at all. He had fitted together the pieces of a person that was on the other side of the bulb. Once he fitted the together the picture of the person on the other side, the picture of the bulb was also fitted together on the other side.

It would have taken the boy much longer to fit the pieces of a bulb together since they are identical. Wisely enough, he fixed the person on the other side which was much easier.

Many times we encounter challenging situations and challenging people such that we become overwhelmed and clueless about how we can fix our circumstances; and many times we don't realize that the solution is actually 'fixing the man.', dealing with ourselves, working on our attitudes, reviewing our responses to situations, seeing things differently, changing our mindset.

We underestimate the power of developing new thought patterns. Fixing 'the man' (yourself) often fixes everything on the other side of the picture. Are you struggling adapt? Are there people around you with character that makes your working hours seem longer? If you can't persuade them to be better, then just focus on 'fixing the man.' Deal with yourself, reprogram your mindset, rehearse the best possible responses to their attitude, adapt and be happy.
