Highlanders 2 (N. Ncube, P. Moyo) - 0 Harare City
HIGHLANDERS produced a vintage second half performance to overcome a very good Harare City side at Barbourfields this afternoon. Goals by impressive forward Njabulo Ncube and Peter 'Rio' Moyo sealed the visitor's fate.
Coach Kelvin Kandu made changes to the team that thumped Shabanie on Friday, benching the workhorse, Bruce Kangwa, the evergreen Mthulisi Maphosa and youngster Knox Mtizwa. In came Masimba Mambare, newboy Douglas Sibanda and Simon Munawa. The team selection seemed to have backfired as Bosso were chasing shadows the entire first half. Harare city were winning all loose balls they were attacking left, right and centre. Munya Diya the Bosso shot stopper was kept a busy man in the first half. Bosso were tepid to say the least . Kaindu quickly reacted by pulling out Douglas Sibanda and introduced Peter Moyo. The move did not yield instant results.
Milton Ncube fought a lone battle in the middle of the park, Mambare was full of running but his final ball always disappointed. Our free kick routines were a mess and corner kicks were wasted. One could sense that it wasn't going to be our day as the visitors were comfortable and even had the audacity to penetrate our defence via both wings. Honest Moyo was having a torrid time and got booked for his troubles when he was beaten clean by a Harare City winger before clipping him. Bruce Tshuma wasn't having any joy on the right either and was stretchered off injured towards the end of the first half to add to our injury woes.
The half time whistle brought relief and we emerged for the second rejuvenated.
Mthulisi Maphosa and Bruce Kangwa were introduced for Tshuma and Graham respectively. We got off to a stormer and the fans were treated to some high octane stuff. Suddenly we were in control of the match. Mthulisi immediately grabbed the midfield and owned it. The passes were inch perfect; Mambare came to life on the right. Kangwa and Honest renewed their telepathic understanding down the left wing and Harare City were at sea. It was only a matter of time before we found the net. The goal was coming.
We came to realize that maybe just maybe this was part of Kaindu's strategy after all. Mid way though the second half, a series of passes inside the City half were initiated, interchanged between Mthulisi, Mambare and Rio. After some nice moves the ball landed on Njabulo's feet. He delightfully dinked the ball over a sliding defender before delivering a belter six yards from goal. A well crafted goal. UBAN' IKHEHLA? Barfourfields erupted into song and dance. 1-0
Just as everyone was still coming to terms with that piece of magic, Mambare was set free on the right wing by the impressive Milton Ncube. He roasted his man and delivered a pitch of cross. Rio jumped to meet it by was sadly a few inches short. He then attempted the Maradona "hand of god" by hooking the ball into the nets with his hand. The impressive referee, Nduna spotted the action and ruled out the goal and rightly booked Rio.
A one nil lead is always a dangerous score line and so it almost proved as city counter attacked 5 minutes from time. Diya pulled of a humongous save when city's impressive captain tried to curl in a shot from the edge of the D. The resultant corner was only half cleared and ex dynamos player, Vengesai met the rebound and took a snap shot and again Diya tipped over.
We attacked one last time and a long ball was pinged forward. Njabulo exquisitely controlled it, took it down and waited for support. It came in the form of Peter 'rio' Moyo. Tshiki as he is affectionately known rolled the ball back to Rio who in turn met it first time and drilled it past the city keeper. 2-0
From then on we coasted to victory. There was still enough time for Mthulisi to thrill us with his Ngquzu which almost always excites the Bosso Family. The final whistle was met with jubilation as we collected yet another set of three points. Bosso were spotting a brand new kit today, an impressive traditional black and white strip.
