The Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Cricket grassroots initiative over received a major boost over the weekend when Harare-based Law firm, Titan Law unveiled a kit sponsorship package for the city's schools.
Mpopoma High School, Mtshingwe and Josiah Chinamano Junior schools in the western suburbs, which in the past did not have access to the game, will alongside Milton Junior and High, Gifford High and Hillside Primary schools in the eastern suburbs, benefit from the sponsorship.
Speaking at the sponsorship unveiling ceremony which was attended by cricket stakeholders in the city, Bulawayo Metropolitan Cricket Association chairperson Gary Nyumbu stressed on the need to expand cricket programmes to previously marginalised communities.
"We need to take this game to a greater part of our community so that most people know and appreciate the game," said Nyumbu.
He appealed to other players in the corporate world to come on board and help in the development of the "gentlemen's game" so that it could be spread to a greater part of the city and applauded Titan Law for sponsoring the league.
"We really appreciate it when you think of ploughing back to the community in such ways and this will help us develop cricket," he said.
Speaking on behalf of Titan Law, Gerald Mlotshwa a senior partner at the firm, said he found it fitting to come back from Harare and sponsor teams in his home town league.
"It's not much that we are doing but we hope to inspire others to participate in sport," he said.
Teams in the Bulawayo Metropolitan Cricket Association league and those which fall in the development zone are also set to get full kits as part of the sponsorship package.
